【Jan.,2023】Is it too late to ask?! This and That on Sustainability: The Climate Change Edition

We started taking sustainability seriously in October 2021. It has been a little over a year, and I am sure we have all had more opportunities to hear talk about sustainability both inside and outside the company, but have you ever been in a situation where you didn’t understand what was being said? Starting in this issue, we would like to have a Q&A about the sustainability related words we want you to remember.

    Q.What even is climate change?

  • 顔写真

    A. Climate change is the resulting change in weather from rising temperatures and the increase in greenhouse gases.

Explanation

The related word “global warming” refers to the increase in the temperature of the Earth’s surface. On the other hand, climate change refers to the rise in sea surface temperatures, the intensifying droughts, the increase in the number of typhoons and hurricanes, and other changes in weather that result from global warming.

Climate change is the result of both natural causes and human activity; however, in 2021 the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) publicly released a report stating, “It is unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, ocean, and land.”

    Q. What is GHG, the thing said to be the main cause of climate change?

  • 顔写真

    A. GHG is an abbreviation for greenhouse gas.

Explanation

The most plentiful greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide (CO2), but other greenhouse gases include methane, nitrous oxide, and CFC substitutes that don’t destroy the ozone layer, such as hydrofluorocarbon, perfluorocarbon, sulfur hexafluoride. These gases are identified by their unique ability to absorb the heat given off by the ground and hold it in the atmosphere, rather than release it into space.

Cow burps contain methane and are said to be related to global warming.

    Q. Recently, we often hear mention of Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. What are they?

  • 顔写真

    A. Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions refer to the ranges in the amount of a company’s GHG emissions.

Explanation

Scope 1 (direct emissions):
Emissions that are given off as a direct result of fuel burning and chemical reactions taking place at our facilities.

Scope 2 (indirect emissions from purchased energy):
Emissions that result from the use of electricity, heat, and steam supplied from other companies.

Scope 3 (Other indirect emissions resulting from company activities):
Indirect emissions that occur as a result of all other company activities not listed in scopes 1 or 2, such as the production of raw materials, the use or disposal of products, business travel or employee commuting, etc. Scope 3 is made up of 15 categories (refer to the image below).

Currently, Inabata Group only calculates and shares Scope 2 emission levels with the public. We plan on calculating Scope 1, 2, and 3 emission levels for FY2022.

Chosen as an ESG FTSE Blossom Japan Sector Relative Index constituent

We were chosen by FTSE Russell* as one of around 500 Japanese constituents of the FTSE Blossom Japan Sector Relative Index.

As a representative investment index of ESG, the index is employed as a passive benchmark by the General Pension Investment Fund (GPIF) for ESG investments. We believe we were selected due to the high rating of our enhanced sustainability policies and ESG-related information disclosure.
